The Wine Tasting
With Spanish Flare

1. N.V. Mas Fi Cava Brut, Catalonia

Cava is Spain’s sparkling wine produced in the traditional Champenoise method but with the Spanish grapes Macabeo, Xarel-lo and Parelleda. Cava means “cave” in Spanish and is named for the caves where the sparkling wine was traditionally aged.

Cava is an excellent value and a great alternative to French champagne. It is great as an aperitif on its own or excellent with Spanish tapas, oysters and seafood dishes.

Mas Fi is a value driven Cava produced by the 4 th generation winemaking Masachs family in the Penedès region outside of Barcelona. It offers light aromas of white flowers, stone fruits and fresh citrus. On the palate it’s fresh and bright with flavors of crisp green apples and pears with hints of ripe stone fruits and toasted brioche. Grapes: 40% Xarel-lo, 35% Macabeo (Viura), 25% Parellada

2. 2024 Carballal ‘Sete Cepas’ Albariño, Rias Baixas, Galicia

Albariño is Spain’s refreshing, dry white wine that is produced in the cool and rainy Rías Baixas region on the Atlantic coast of Spain where the Albariño grape really shines. Albariño has been grown in this coastal region since the 12th century but only started getting worldwide attention in the 1980’s when wine importers began promoting Albariño wines in international markets. Now Albariño is recognized as one of Spain’s noble grapes, capable of producing world class white wines. This “Sete Cepas” Albariño has all the great qualities of classic Albariño with intense aromas of citrus flowers and peaches and zesty flavors of ripe stone and citrus fruits. Vibrant acidity and minerality keep this fruit forward wine crisp, refreshing and light making it great as an aperitif, but Albariño is also known for being amazingly versatile and able to pair with a wide variety of foods. The classic pairing is seafood, but Albariño easily stands up to flavorful and spicy foods from all over the globe. “Sete (7) Cepas” is a playful nod to the fact that there are seven brothers in the family winery. Grape: 100% Albariño

RED WINES

3. 2023 Bruma del Estrecho de Marín ‘Paraje Marin’ Monastrell, Jumilla

Monastrell, also known as Mourvedre in France and other parts of the world, is widely grown in the hills of southeastern Spain near Valencia in the Jumilla and Alicante wine regions where it thrives in the dry, hot summers and cold winters. The area called Estrecho de Marín where the Viña Elena bodega is located, lies in a valley flanked by two majestic mountains and is Jumilla’s warmest, driest region. The vines used to make this “Paraje Marin” wine are planted on both sides of the valley: those in the east are subject to more shade and give the wine freshness, minerality and elegance, while those in the west are subject to more sunlight and give the wine the characteristic depth and richness of the Monastrell grape variety. The 2023 “Paraje Marin” is a fresh and vibrant red wine with aromas of red fruits such as strawberries and cherries, accompanied by a subtle hint of plums. On the palate, it is juicy, well-balanced and smooth with dark red fruits and hints of spice and Mediterranean herbs. This wine will pair well with a wide of foods from classic Spanish rice dishes to salmon or white and red meats. Grape: 100% Monastrell (Mourvedre)

4. 2019 Cune Reserva, Rioja

Rioja, in the north of Spain, is Spain’s most recognized wine region and known for its red wines made predominately from the Tempranillo grape and often blended with other varieties like Grenache and Graciano. These wines are characterized by their red fruit flavors (cherry, plum) and spice notes from oak aging. Rioja wines are also known for their aging potential, with different classifications (Crianza, Reserva, Gran Reserva) reflecting the length of time spent aging in oak barrels and then in bottle. CVNE is one of the more historical producers in Rioja, starting in 1879, and helped define classic Rioja wines.

Both CVNE and CUNE refer to the same winery, Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España (The Northern Spanish Wine Company) but a simple spelling mistake, confusing the “V” with a “U”, led to the creation of the now iconic brand name, Cune. While the official name is CVNE, the winery and the wines produced under the original label are commonly known as Cune, pronounced “Coo-nay”. Their 2019 Reserva is a beautiful medium bodied wine with aromas of fresh berries and baking spices. The wine has great concentration of blackberry and black cherry fruits but also has great acidity keeping it vibrant and fresh. Notes of licorice and vanilla round out the wine and the fairly soft tannins make it great for drinking now.                          This Rioja Reserva is ideal for savory rice dishes and braised, roasted or grilled meats, especially lamb and pork. Blend: 85% Tempranillo, 15% blend of Grenache, Graciano and Carignan.

5. 2021 Bodegas Breca ‘Breca’ Old Vine Garnacha, Calatayud

The Calatayud wine region, located in Aragón of northeastern Spain, is known for its bold red wines, particularly those made from the Garnacha grape. (Garnacha is the Spanish name for Grenache.) It’s the second-largest wine-producing region in Aragón, boasting a long history dating back to Roman times.

Bodegas Breca was founded by an American wine importer in 2010 with the mission of producing the finest Garnacha in Aragón. Garnacha de Aragón, the clone used to produce the wines of Bodegas Breca, is the most ancient and genetically untouched clone of Grenache in the world. Breca is made from very old Grenache vines which produce generous and bold Garnacha wines packed with black and red fruits with plenty of spice notes ranging from baking spice to black pepper. This is a crowd-pleasing wine that can pair well with bbq, burgers, roasted and grilled meats. Grape: 100% Grenache

6. 2021 Pago de Los Capellanes Crianza, Ribera del Duero

Ribera del Duero is a prestigious wine region known for its high-quality red wines made from

the Tempranillo grape, locally called Tinto Fino or Tinta del País. It’s located in the Castilla y León region, along the Duero River, and is characterized by a continental climate with hot, dry summers and cold winters, leading to intense, full-bodied red wines. The Pago de los Capellanes winery is located in the heart of the Ribera del Duero wine region and its name translates to ‘Land of the Chaplains’ because in the 14th century the land where the winery Is located was mostly owned by the church as the locals would donate their land to the church as a thank you for their religious services. This medium to full bodied Tempranillo is brick red in the glass and offers aromas of ripe berry fruits and spice. The palate is rich yet balanced and fresh with flavors of blackberry compote and plum jam with hints of mocha, vanilla baking spices. The oak is prevalent but subtle and the finish is long and spicy. Ribera del Duero wines pair excellently with roasted or grilled meats, especially beef and lamb. Grape: 100% Tempranillo
