Community Spirit Shines at the Annual Kid's Fishing Derby

The 32nd edition of the Los Alamitos Cypress & Seal Beach Rotary Kid’s Fishing Derby was an absolutely amazing event.

In a world where digital screens often dominate the attention of our youth, the Rotary Club of Los Alamitos, Cypress & Seal Beach once again provided a refreshing, hands-on experience that brings our community together. This past Saturday marked the 32nd Annual Seal Beach Kid’s Fishing Derby, an event that has grown into a beloved tradition, eagerly anticipated by families from near and far.

As the day began shortly before 7, the early morning clouds provided the perfect setting. More than 300 excited young anglers, some armed with their own tackle boxes and hopeful smiles, gathered at the pier.

And, thanks to the generous support of the California Department of Fish & Wildlife, those without a rod and reel were equipped with a free fishing pole and tackle, making it possible for any child, regardless of

experience or background, to join in on the fun. And when it came to bait, the Rotarians left no stone unturned, ensuring that each child had an ample supply to maximize their chances of reeling in the big one.

The Seal Beach Lions Club kicked off the day with their legendary pancake and sausage breakfast, fueling participants and parents alike with the kind of warmth and hospitality that only a close-knit community can provide. The smell of sizzling sausages mingled with the salty sea breeze, setting the stage for a day that would be remembered for years to come.

The excitement was palpable as the kids cast their lines into the glistening water, their eyes wide with anticipation. The BaitRunners Fishing Club added an extra layer of thrill this year, donating two brand-new bicycles and nearly 20 fishing rods and reels to the raffle. For many, the prospect of winning one of these prizes was as exhilarating as the fishing itself.

As the morning wore on, the overcast sky provided the perfect backdrop, keeping temperatures comfortable and spirits high. It wasn’t long before the first triumphant shouts of “I got one!” echoed across the pier, signaling the start of a steady stream of catches that kept the volunteers busy and the kids grinning from ear to ear. From small fish to a guitar fish and a sting-ray there were many a species caught and released on the day.

When noon arrived, the sun broke through just in time for the much-anticipated awards ceremony. Trophies were handed out for the biggest catches in each of the three age groups, and the pride on the faces of the winners was matched only by the cheers of their friends and family. And thanks to the raffle, many of our participants went home with a prize, whether it was a shiny new fishing rod and reel, a well supplied tackle box, or one of the coveted bicycles.

The Seal Beach Kid’s Fishing Derby is more than just a day of fun; it’s a celebration of what makes our community truly special. It’s about bringing people together, fostering a love for the outdoors, and creating memories that will last a lifetime. The success of this event is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the Rotary Club of Los Alamitos, Cypress & Seal Beachthe Seal Beach Lions, the California Department of Fish & Wildlife, and the BaitRunners Fishing Club.

As the last of the kids packed up their gear and headed home, there was a sense of satisfaction in the air—a feeling that can only come from knowing you’ve been part of something meaningful, something that strengthens the fabric of our community. This year’s Fishing Derby was truly magical, and it’s events like this that remind us all why we love being a part of the Los Alamitos, Cypress & Seal Beach Rotary Club community.
